Well the beginning of shooting is nearly upon us. All this pre production finally comes to the forfront as we start rolling the camera.
Nearly everything is in place, just a few more touches on music, costume and various other things are being made over the next few days and then we will be in to it.
There are still a couple of crew positions open. If anyone wants to be a Unit person or a camera assistant do get in touch with me at Adam.ac.king@gmail.com
Ciao!
Hey everyone who wants to be an extra, or is an extra for Odd Socks. This is all the information you need to know about the dates and times we are filming.
If you would like to be an extra, I have asked you or someone has asked on behalf of me please email me me your cell phone number and other details, along with the dates that you can make it to Adam.ac.king@gmail.com
You do not need to be able to make every filming date, it is just preferable.
Sock Mutants:
27th and 28th January 7pm till midnight/1am and 8th 9th 10th of Febuary 7pm till midnight/1am. These dates might change ever so slightly (by a day or so either way) but are pretty fixed for now.
Sock mutants will be getting awesome costumes made for them, so when you email me with a confirmation I will email you back with a bunch of measurements you need to give me so we can make you a costume. Some of you may also get facial prosthetics.
Defenders:
25th, 27th and 28th of January 7pm till midnight/1am and 9th and 10th of Febuary 7pm till midnight/1am. These dates might change ever so slightly (by a day or so either way) but are pretty fixed for now.
Defenders will need to bring basics of their own costume (which you will be let known about), but will also be provided with other costume pieces. you also get awesome weapons to swing around.
You do not need to be able to make every filming date, it is just preferable.
Again, if you are keen, email me your cell number and available dates at adam.ac.king@gmail.com
Cheers!
So this morning Michael and I went to Matts place to try out some
prosthetics on his face for tests to see what Darning might look like.
Matt used the material from the body suit and attached it to a latex backing which he then attached to Mike’s face. After it was all attached we stuffed the middle of it, round the eyes, the nose and chin with tissue paper to see how fat we could get the face.
It started to look really good, and Mike was able to make a number of funny and scary expression with the mask on. If you want to check out more photos go to the facebook page, they are on there.
However I think that it is going to need to be a lot fatter, this means more tissues around the neck and head. when the costume is done that will make things easier.
Speaking of costumes, we also met up with Emma who took some measurements for the fat suit. It should be underway soon, I can’t wait to see Darning come together. Goodness knows hes costing enough.
So I decided that it would be crazy to go this project alone on the production side of things. So I have now got two awesome people on board to help out as my producer and assistant director.
Brendon Udy, who is a fellow film maker from Auckland university has agreed to produce the film with me. He has a number of his own films under his belt as well as having worked on a large number of other peoples films. As of late he has done a lot of producing and is becoming very good at it. He is also underway in making a Zombie web series at the moment.
James Mulrennan is an old school friend of mine who has been making films with me since I started making films. Although not technically a film student, (hes a Law student) – he is a film student at heart, which is where it counts. He has one of his own films under his belt, and like Brendon has worked on a very large number of other low budget student films. Over the last 3 years James has AD’d for me countless times and this project is going to show just how damn good at the job he is.
So they are helping me out in my last month of pre production before I go crazy, and then we will tackle production together very soob, which I am looking forward to very much.
So Rowan and Sandy have been working very hard over the last week or so and I now have over half of the songs completly composed, about a quarter written and half composed and 2 or 3 still waiting in the wings.
Its great to hear the music finally coming into existance, its giving me a lot more inspiration to get the film into gear. Even just listening to the music I can see (and hear) the film taking form. I can’t wait to start shooting!
Rehearsals begin again with the new script next week as well. Unfortunatly we wont have Liam Nolan again until the shoot as he is away, but I’m sure he will pick it up really quickly.
Might put up one of the songs when its properly recorded (or a smaple of the song) Until next time! – Adam
So one of the biggest hurdles that I forsaw in the production of this film was
going to be making King Darning and the Sock Mutant army as realistic as possible. I wanted realism, but also I wanted them to be scary, which obviously is a bit of a challange with an army made out of socks…
However with the help of Matt Brachi, a prosthetics expert, King Darning and quite possibly a few of our sock mutants are going to be kitted out in full facial prosthetics.
After a meeting and a discussion with Matt, I am fully confident that in working with Emma, our costume designer, we can combine a great mix of costume and special effects makeup
to really make King Darning and the Sock Mutants look as awesome, if not better than Lucy’s sketches.
The photos that I have put through this blog entry are some examples of Matt’s previous work. Marvel in its brilliance. Over the coming weeks we are going to do some tests, and get facial patterns of Mike Bugbee so hopefully we will begin to see how that will shape up, and I will put pictures on the facebook page.
Cool!
So when doing a movie about an invasion of sock mutants, there is one essential element that you need, and that obviously is socks. And I need a LOT of socks.
However, the amazing people at Comfort New Zealand Ltd and the Managing Director Dave Giddens have taken heed of our plight and have agreed to provide us with thousands of socks, basically as many as we want from their seconds, run offs and end of lines.
They seem rather stoaked to be able to help and Dave was saying to me that this is by far the strangest request that they have ever had for sponsorship or promotion. He also said if we ever want any more just to shoot them a phone call or an email and he can get more shipped up to us ASAP.
So big ups to Comfort New Zealand who have saved me from pestering all of you for your old socks!
So finally I have the time to commit back to the pre production of Odd Socks (and so does everyone else). Exams have finished and for most of us all we have to think about is work and holidaying! (and this…)
A few things have been happening since we last spoke. I have been having regular rehearsals with the cast. We have all been working on the script and with the actors we are making the script and the characters the best they can be.
I am also working on finishing the last draft of the script which is coming along nicely. Hopefully it will be finished soon and the actors and I can get into hardcore rehearsing.
Also, we have a lot of the lyrics and songs nearing completion, so hopefully in the coming weeks I will be able to put up some sneak peaks of them.
Aaaaaand apparently the costumes are coming along very nicely. I’m going to go and see them and take a lot of pictures!!
Cool! – Adam
So I haven’t updated the blog in a while becasue I have been so busy in recent days with university work.
But hes a little update for everyone. The songs are all coming along very nicely, hopefully within the next couple of weeks I will be able to release one or two songs for you all to hear.
I am also keeping up weekly run throughs with my cast which is evolving the script and the characters. Its been really nice to see how each of the actors are bringing a bit of themselves to the characters, which is changing them all for the better and I am loving moving things about with them to make it so much better.
I filmed some of our last readthrough and did some interviews with everyone which I am going to edit together once I am not as busy and they will all go up on the youtube account.
In the next few weeks as well, things are going to start hotting up on here and I will go back to my promise of a video a week and trying to post something on here every 1 or 2 days.
Until then, I’ll catch you later!
As things do, the production is underoing a few changes. Due to time contraints and work overloads we now have a new composer for the film. Sandy Lynch is an outside composer with much more time on her hands than any of us over worked university students have.
After a meeting with her yesterday I’m fully convinced that she is going to be great for the job. We nutted out some ideas for a few of the earlier songs in the script and hopefully soon we will be able to hear the fruits of her labour.
In the next week or so I’ll be updating the crew page with her profile if you want to go and learn a bit more about her.
